We don’t see the world as it is.
Perception is much more than just a look. It is a filter, an interpretation, a mental construction influenced by our history, our emotions, our culture. It shapes our decisions, our relationships, our way of working. And yet, it often remains invisible… until it is questioned.
Perception in professional relationships
In managerial relationships, perception influences the way a leader interprets the behaviors of his or her employees. Silence can be perceived as disengagement, when it can simply reflect an ongoing reflection or the fear of not expressing oneself. In Asia, a person will only speak if he or she has been expressly authorized to do so. Understanding that each individual filters reality in their own way helps to avoid misunderstandings and strengthens the quality of management.
In business relationships, perception plays a key role in understanding the customer’s needs. A NO can be interpreted as an opposition, whereas it can simply reflect a misunderstanding or an unexpressed need. Working on one’s own perception and that of the other allows you to adapt your request, to listen better and to build a lasting relationship.
Finally, in the development strategy, executives may have different visions of the same project. One sees an opportunity, the other a risk. These divergences are not obstacles, but richness or differences of point of view to be explored. No doubt each of the visions has a part of truth and is justified. Becoming aware of these perceptions allows for better alignment of visions and co-construction of a more robust strategy.

- Choose a situation you have recently experienced (e.g., meeting, tense exchange, decision to be made).
- Describe it in a factual way.
- Imagine 3 different interpretations: – With your own filters – With the eyes of a colleague – With a neutral posture, that of the observer
- Identifies what is factual vs. interpreted.5. Ask yourself, “How could this situation be perceived differently?”
Conclusion
Perception is a prism. It can lock us up or open us up. To become aware of this is already to begin to better understand others… and yourself.
